Real experience at Villa Durazzo
I have photographed both an intimate civil elopement and a larger outdoor wedding at Villa Durazzo, including preparations, ceremonies, family moments, interiors and garden portraits.
SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE · VILLA DURAZZO · ITALIAN RIVIERA
Documentary wedding photography and elegant portraits for celebrations in Santa Margherita Ligure, from Villa Durazzo garden ceremonies to coastal hotel weddings and intimate Italian Riviera elopements.
I have photographed preparations at Imperiale Palace Hotel, two different weddings at Villa Durazzo, portraits through the town and harbour, and celebrations that continued into nearby Portofino.
A calmer Riviera base with strong local character
Santa Margherita Ligure has a different rhythm from Portofino. It offers a working harbour, broad waterfront, historic hotels, churches, villa gardens and more room for guests to move through the day.
My approach combines quiet documentary coverage with short, purposeful portrait sessions. The photographs should preserve the people and atmosphere first, while still using the patterned terraces, painted rooms, palms and coastal light that make this part of Liguria distinctive.
I have photographed both an intimate civil elopement and a larger outdoor wedding at Villa Durazzo, including preparations, ceremonies, family moments, interiors and garden portraits.
Portraits are planned around the light and the real timeline, not allowed to take over the wedding. A few focused minutes in the right place usually creates stronger photographs.
Preparations, guest arrivals, ceremony reactions, speeches, children, evening atmosphere and the transitions between venues all matter as much as the formal portraits.
Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino are close but separate. Timelines need to allow for roads, boats, guest movement and the different light around each location.
The two towns work well together, but they create different wedding days. Santa Margherita Ligure is better suited to larger guest movement, hotel stays, civil ceremonies and celebrations centred around Villa Durazzo or the waterfront.
Portofino is smaller and more concentrated around its harbour and lanes. It can be added for a short portrait session or a separate event, but a Santa Margherita wedding should not be written or photographed as though the two places are interchangeable.
This page therefore owns the Santa Margherita Ligure commercial intent, while the separate Portofino page remains the main destination for couples specifically planning a Portofino wedding.
Couples whose main celebration is in Portofino should use the Portofino wedding photographer page.
Local venues and ceremony settings
The town offers a historic villa, grand hotels, religious buildings, civic spaces and a waterfront that can support very different styles of celebration.
Historic villa and gardens
Photographed first-hand
A central Santa Margherita Ligure venue with painted rooms, Villa San Giacomo, an Italian Garden, patterned pebble terraces and a large park overlooking the Gulf of Tigullio.
Best for: Civil and symbolic ceremonies, intimate elopements, larger garden weddings and celebrations that use both indoor and outdoor spaces.
Grand hotel by the sea
Venue to consider
An Art Nouveau hotel on the Santa Margherita waterfront. Its official wedding information highlights terrace ceremonies, sea-facing celebrations, hotel accommodation and the possibility of dancing close to the water.
Best for: Couples who want accommodation, reception spaces and a polished Riviera hotel experience in one place.
Belle Époque hotel
Preparations photographed first-hand
A historic hotel in Santa Margherita Ligure with sea views, formal interiors and gardens. I photographed Brian preparing here before Anna and Brian’s Villa Durazzo ceremony.
Best for: Wedding preparations, hotel stays, intimate events and celebrations that connect easily with Villa Durazzo or the waterfront.
Local ceremony settings
Planning depends on permissions
Santa Margherita Ligure combines religious buildings, municipal civil-wedding procedures, the waterfront and hillside viewpoints. Each option requires its own access and timing plan.
Best for: Couples who want the town itself to become part of the wedding story rather than staying entirely within one venue.
A strong Santa Margherita wedding gallery should show how the day actually felt: the preparation rooms, the walk or drive to the ceremony, guests finding their places around the fountain, children moving through the gardens, and the quieter moments after the vows.
The portraits then add structure without changing the character of the day. Villa Durazzo’s dark salons, tall shutters, balconies and patterned terraces give very different visual possibilities within a short distance.
The town is practical by Riviera standards, but a good photography timeline still needs to protect the ceremony, portrait light and movement between locations.
Preparations at Imperiale Palace or Grand Hotel Miramare can connect naturally with Villa Durazzo, but the schedule still needs time for dressing, family moments, transport and guest arrivals.
The Italian Garden works beautifully for ceremony context and wider portraits. The painted rooms and shuttered windows are stronger for quieter, more cinematic photographs.
A Portofino portrait session can work, but only when traffic, parking, boats and the wedding timeline allow it. The Santa Margherita story should remain complete without depending on a rushed transfer.
Municipal procedures, available ceremony spaces and venue terms can change. Couples should confirm the current legal and booking requirements directly with the municipality and venue.
Dinner, speeches and dancing often reveal more personality than another long portrait session. Coverage should leave enough time for the celebration to develop naturally.
Best planning advice: Build the day around one clear local base, then add Portofino or a boat journey only when it genuinely improves the experience.
The right amount of photography depends on whether the celebration stays at one venue or moves between hotels, Villa Durazzo, the harbour and nearby Portofino.
Intimate
Suitable for small Villa Durazzo ceremonies, a short preparation sequence and portraits through the gardens, town and waterfront.
Full day
Preparation through ceremony, portraits, dinner, speeches and the beginning of the evening. This is the strongest choice when the day includes more than one location.
Weekend
Welcome dinners, boat trips, the wedding day and a relaxed brunch can be photographed as one connected Riviera story.
First-hand evidence
These are separate celebrations with different scales, timelines and photographic needs. Together they show how the venue works for both an intimate civil elopement and a larger garden wedding.
Intimate civil elopement
Hotel Splendido preparations, a civil ceremony in Villa San Giacomo and portraits through the Italian Garden, Santa Margherita Ligure and the coast.

Larger garden wedding
Imperiale Palace and Hotel Splendido preparations, an outdoor Villa Durazzo ceremony, villa portraits, Portofino harbour and an evening reception.

View the weddingNo. Villa Durazzo is in Santa Margherita Ligure. Portofino is nearby, but it is a separate town and should be planned as a separate location in the wedding timeline.
Yes. I have photographed two distinct Villa Durazzo celebrations: an intimate civil elopement and a larger outdoor garden wedding with a Hotel Splendido reception.
Yes, when the hotel and timeline suit the wedding. I photographed Brian preparing at Imperiale Palace before travelling to the Villa Durazzo ceremony.
The hotel currently promotes terrace ceremonies, sea-facing celebrations, accommodation and events by the water. Availability, spaces and commercial terms should be confirmed directly with the hotel.
Yes, but the schedule should allow realistic travel time and account for traffic, boats, parking and harbour crowds. It should be an intentional addition rather than a rushed detour.
Yes. Exact legal procedures and available municipal or venue spaces should be confirmed directly with the local authorities and venue before the timeline is finalised.
The answer depends on the season and ceremony time. The gardens can be strong for wider portraits, while the villa interiors provide shade and controlled light during brighter parts of the day.
Yes. Coverage can include welcome dinners, boat trips, the wedding day and a farewell event when the full destination experience is part of the celebration.
I usually photograph weddings personally. A second or third photographer can be added when the guest count, simultaneous preparations or venue layout make extra coverage useful.
Share your date, venues, guest count and the shape of the celebration. I will help you assess the photography coverage and the practical movement between hotels, Villa Durazzo, the waterfront and nearby Portofino.
