Loire Valley Wedding Photographer

As a Loire Valley wedding photographer, I get to spend my days surrounded by castles that look like they belong in fairy tales. The region is often called the “Valley of the Kings,” but for me it’s more like the Valley of Weddings — filled with châteaux like Chenonceau, Chambord, Villandry, Amboise, and Brissac, each one more photogenic than the last.

I’m Janis Ratnieks, and photographing weddings in France’s château heartland is both my job and my guilty pleasure. I’ve had the privilege of shooting celebrations at Château d’Artigny, Château de la Lude, Clos Lucé, Domaine de la Tortinière, and the fairytale Château Challain, and every time I pick up my camera here it feels like stepping into history with a love story to tell.

The Loire Valley is a dream for couples who want romance mixed with grandeur. You can exchange vows in a Renaissance ballroom, wander through endless gardens for portraits, and sip champagne in a courtyard where kings once plotted history. My role? To make sure those moments — and the laughter, tears, and happy chaos in between — are captured forever in a way that feels as timeless as the château walls themselves.  View France Chateau Weddings Portfolio

Why Choose a Wedding in the Loire Valley

The Loire Valley isn’t just a pretty region on the map, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the “Garden of France.” When you arrive, it’s easy to see why couples from all over the world fall in love with it. This stretch of countryside is packed with rolling vineyards, storybook villages, and of course, some of the most famous châteaux in France.

Imagine saying “I do” in the shadow of Château de Chambord, strolling hand in hand across the arched bridge of Château de Chenonceau, or hosting your reception among the perfectly trimmed gardens of Château de Villandry. The Loire Valley has a way of blending royal grandeur with pure romance.

It’s also incredibly versatile for destination weddings. Want an intimate celebration in a boutique château? You’ll find it here. Dreaming of a weekend-long affair with a rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and fireworks? The Loire’s historic estates can handle that too. Add in world-class wines, French cuisine, and the charm of Renaissance architecture, and you have all the ingredients for a wedding that feels both timeless and unforgettable.

My Approach as a Loire Valley Wedding Photographer

Being a Loire Valley wedding photographer means more than just turning up with a camera. It’s about blending documentary storytelling with fine-art portraiture so your photos feel alive and timeless at the same time. I want you to look back and remember not just how the day looked, but how it felt.

That means capturing the big emotions — the nervous smile before walking down the aisle, the tear your partner wipes away during the vows, the champagne-fueled dance moves at midnight — while also giving plenty of attention to the setting. After all, if you’ve chosen a château in the Loire Valley, the architecture and gardens deserve their moment too.

Natural light is my best friend here. I’ll use the golden glow in château courtyards, the soft shadows of Renaissance ballrooms, and the dreamy evening light over vineyard hillsides to create portraits that feel as magical as the setting itself. Whether you’re celebrating at Château d’Artigny, Château du Lude, Château du Grand-Lucé, Domaine de la Tortinière, or the fairytale Château Challain, my aim is always the same: photographs that are emotional, elegant, and unmistakably French.

Famous Loire Valley Château Wedding Venues

The Loire Valley is often called the land of a thousand châteaux, and with good reason. Each one has its own character, and many are available as wedding venues that look like they’ve been pulled straight from a fairytale. Here are a few of the most iconic:

Château de Chenonceau – Known as the “château of the ladies,” Chenonceau stretches gracefully across the River Cher with its famous arched bridge. It’s one of the most romantic and photogenic wedding venues in France.

Château de Chambord – The largest and grandest of the Loire châteaux, Chambord is a Renaissance masterpiece with soaring towers and endless grounds. If you’re dreaming of a royal backdrop for your wedding photos, this château is unmatched.

Château de Villandry – Famous worldwide for its Renaissance gardens, Villandry is a paradise for outdoor ceremonies and portraits. The geometric patterns of flowers and hedges make every photograph look like a painting.

Château d’Amboise and Château du Clos Lucé – Perched above the Loire River, Amboise was once a royal residence and now offers sweeping views of the valley. Just a short walk away, Clos Lucé is where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years, adding a unique touch of history to weddings held there.

Château de Brissac – Known as the tallest château in France, Brissac impresses with dramatic towers, opulent interiors, and vast grounds. It’s a venue made for couples who want both grandeur and atmosphere.

Planning Your Wedding in the Loire Valley

Timing is everything when it comes to a Loire Valley wedding. Spring and autumn are ideal for château celebrations, with gardens in full bloom and mild, golden light for photos. Summer is perfect for vineyard weddings and outdoor receptions, though you’ll want to plan for the warmer weather. Even in winter, the châteaux have their own charm, offering intimate interiors and festive atmospheres.

The region is also remarkably easy to reach. The Loire Valley sits just two hours from Paris by train, which means international guests can arrive at Charles de Gaulle, hop on the TGV, and be at your château before the champagne is chilled.

Because each château has its own rules, logistics, and quirks, I always recommend working with a local wedding planner. They can help with permits, trusted vendors, and smooth timelines so that you can simply enjoy your day.
