About
Wedding photography in the South of France
I’m Janis Ratnieks, a destination wedding photographer. I photograph weddings across the South of France, from the French Riviera to Provence — including Antibes, Cap-Ferrat, Monaco, Saint-Tropez, Mougins, and Grasse.
My approach is documentary first. I focus on real moments, clean composition, and flattering light. You get images that feel natural on the day and timeless years later.

Planning guide
Planning your South of France wedding photography
The South of France photographs beautifully, but it also comes with strong sun, summer heat, and travel logistics. I help couples plan the timeline around flattering light, realistic travel time, and the way your day actually flows.
French Riviera vs Provence: what feels right?
The French Riviera (Côte d’Azur) is sea views, terraces, and iconic venues from Antibes to Cap-Ferrat, Monaco and Saint-Tropez. Provence is vineyards, olive groves, stone villages, and château settings with more space and calmer logistics.

Light, heat, and midday sun
In summer, midday light can be harsh. I solve this with shaded portrait spots, clean indoor backdrops, and short, relaxed couple sessions. Then we do the cinematic portraits later, when the light softens.
Wind and backup plans
Provence can get windy, and the coast can change quickly. I plan portrait locations with a sheltered option so you’re never stuck.
A timeline that usually photographs best
- Prep: 60–90 minutes (details + real moments)
- Ceremony: I arrive early for guests + location
- Couple portraits: 15–25 minutes, twice (short + golden hour)
- Reception: speeches + atmosphere + dancing without “posing” the night

FAQ
Quick answers to the questions couples usually ask when planning a wedding in the South of France.
How far in advance should we book a South of France wedding photographer?
For peak dates (June to September), 9–15 months ahead is common. If your venue and date are fixed, it’s worth checking availability early, especially for weekends on the French Riviera.
How many hours of coverage do couples usually book?
Most couples book 8–10 hours, covering prep through the first dances. For destination weddings, I often add welcome dinner coverage or a short next-day session if you want a fuller story.
Do you help with timeline and portrait locations?
Yes. I help plan timings around light and travel time, and I suggest portrait spots that fit your venue and vibe (villa gardens, old-town streets, vineyards, coastal viewpoints). The goal is calm and efficient, not a long photoshoot.
How do you handle travel costs within the South of France?
I keep it simple: travel is usually a flat fee that covers flights, car hire, and accommodation. Once it’s agreed, there are no hidden extras. Then the focus stays on the wedding, not the clock.
Do you shoot film or digital?
Both. I shoot digital for reliability and speed, and I add 35mm or medium-format film for its colour and texture. Your final gallery is fully edited, high-resolution, and delivered online.
