So, when Sophie and Benjamin invited me to photograph their black-tie wedding at Palazzo Pisani Moretta, I knew it was going to be something extraordinary.
The Day Begins at The Gritti Palace
The morning started at The Gritti Palace Hotel, a Venetian landmark where elegance oozes out of every chandelier. Sophie got ready in one suite, Benjamin in another — which was very practical for two reasons:
They didn’t see each other before the ceremony.
The Gritti has the kind of light that makes any photographer quietly whisper “thank you” under their breath.
Hair, makeup, laughter, a bit of champagne — and yes, a few nervous deep breaths.
Arriving at Palazzo Pisani Moretta by Boat
There’s really only one proper way to arrive at Palazzo Pisani Moretta — by boat. (Technically, you can walk there, but where’s the drama in that?)
As Sophie’s gondola floated down the Grand Canal, the scene felt like pure Venetian theater. Guests stood waiting on the palace steps, dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns, the warm May sunlight dancing off the water.
When Sophie’s gondola came into view, rose petals began to fly — a soft shower of white and blush pink tossed by friends and family. Benjamin extended his hand, and together they stepped inside the palazzo — a moment straight out of a black-and-white film, except with better lighting.
Inside Palazzo Pisani Moretta – The Grand Ceremony
The ceremony room was something else entirely. Imagine soaring ceilings covered in 18th-century frescoes, Venetian glass chandeliers, walls whispering centuries of history, and hundreds of flickering candles bringing everything to life.
White and pink rose petals lined the aisle, and the light poured through the tall windows facing the Grand Canal — that unmistakable Venetian architecture outside reminding everyone: you are in the most romantic city in the world.
Sophie looked incredible in her gown — elegant yet modern — while Benjamin’s black-tie suit brought pure classic cool. I’ve photographed weddings all around the world, but there’s just something about a ceremony framed by the Grand Canal that gets me every time
Cocktails, Candles & Cultural Touches
After a short portrait session (because I couldn’t resist those reflections on the water), the newlyweds joined their guests for cocktail hour.
That’s when the real magic happened — quite literally. An Italian gentleman appeared to light every single candle in the room. Slowly, the palazzo began to glow — golden, intimate, and cinematic.
The décor was a mix of European elegance and Chinese symbolism, a perfect reflection of Sophie and Benjamin’s story — a European groom and an Asian bride blending two cultures beautifully. Subtle red accents, delicate paper details, and the romantic warmth of Venetian lamps made the whole space feel alive.
Dinner began, speeches were heartfelt (and occasionally hilarious), and the night ended with dancing, cake, and a lot of laughter echoing through centuries-old halls.
