Destination Wedding Photographer

Love knows no borders. And neither do I

Hi, I’m Janis Ratnieks, a destination wedding photographer who’s basically spent the last decade chasing two things: love stories and decent Wi-Fi.

Where love takes you, I’ll be there with a camera (and sunscreen… usually)

I’ve photographed weddings in over 40 countries — from castles in Scotland to beaches in Mexico, temples in Asia, vineyards in Italy, deserts in Tunisia, and rooftops in Hong Kong. I’ve seen it all: tearful grooms, happy brides, dancing grandmas, and that one uncle who always steals the microphone.

Wherever you’re getting married — Europe, Australia, Canada, or on a mountaintop where llamas outnumber people — I’ll find the best light and make you look like a Vogue cover couple (minus the stress and the fashion week hangover).

Why “destination wedding photographer” is basically my middle name

There are two kinds of photographers:

  1. Those who love airports.

  2. Those who don’t.

I’m definitely the first kind — the one who can pack camera gear faster than most people pack a toothbrush.

Over the years, I’ve shot weddings in:

  • Italy: The golden light of Tuscany and the drama of Lake Como.

  • France: Paris elegance meets lavender fields in Provence.

  • Greece: Santorini sunsets that should probably come with a warning label.

  • Iceland: Where wind, waterfalls, and wow happen at the same time.

  • Mexico: Color, culture, and margaritas (in that order).

  • Hong Kong & Asia: Glamour meets chaos — I love both.

  • New Zealand: Pure cinematic magic, sheep included.

If there’s a spot on Earth where two humans want to get married, I probably have a photo of it—or at least a story.

All love,
all nations,
all people...

Here’s my philosophy: love is love, and everyone deserves epic photos.
I’ve photographed couples of every nationality, sexuality, religion, and hairstyle — and my only rule is that you’re in love and ready to dance at least once.

Whether it’s a Jewish wedding in Israel, an elopement in Iceland, or a same-sex celebration on a Spanish beach, I’m there for it.
Every couple, every background, every love story — completely welcome in front of my lens.

Janis was absolutely incredible! Not only were the photos beautiful and exactly what we asked for, but he was such a pleasure to have around on the day! I would highly recommend Janis!

I don't know what I expected prior to looking at our wedding photos, but Janis' work was exceptional. The photos were gorgeous. He was there ready with his camera for every important moment and the photos are cute, candid and so un-cringe. Janis helped make two very un-photogenic people feel comfortable and look great. He did everything I wanted and more! Couldn't recommend him enough!

Janis photographed our 3-day wedding in France, and I highly recommend him. Janis was a great photographer and lots of fun to work with. Our photographs were stunning and delivered quickly after the event. He was especially great at taking action shots and bringing life into our photoshoots. We'll always treasure these special memories photographed by Janis.

A world of weddings

Here’s a humble brag: I’ve shot weddings on six continents (Antarctica, I’m still waiting for your invite).

That global experience helps me adapt fast — to different light, customs, and dance moves. I’ll blend in like a local… except with two cameras and a questionable addiction to airport coffee.

Frequently Asked Questions about Destination Wedding Photography

1. What exactly is a destination wedding photographer?
A destination wedding photographer is someone who travels with you to photograph your wedding anywhere in the world. I don’t just show up with a camera; I plan the logistics, scout the location, deal with the weather, and sometimes even help carry the bouquet. My goal is to make your wedding photos feel like art, not souvenirs.
2. Do you shoot destination weddings anywhere in the world?
Yes — if there’s light, love, and a way to get there, I’ll shoot it. I’ve photographed weddings in Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, Africa, and Oceania. From intimate elopements to grand celebrations, I’m open to any destination. Even if it’s remote or unusual, I’ll figure it out. That’s half the fun.
3. How far in advance should we book you for a destination wedding?
Ideally 9–12 months ahead, especially for peak European wedding months (May through September). But if you’re the spontaneous type, reach out anyway — sometimes I have last-minute availability, and I’m always up for an adventure.
4. How do travel costs work for destination weddings?
I keep things simple. You cover travel and accommodation (economy flights and reasonable lodging), and I handle everything else. I often combine multiple weddings on one trip, so if I’m already in your region, travel fees might be minimal. Ask me — I’m very transparent about costs.
5. What’s your photography style for destination weddings?
Candid, emotional, cinematic. Think timeless imagery with just the right amount of drama. I don’t over-pose people — I capture real moments, beautiful light, and authentic connection. Whether your wedding is on a Paris rooftop or a Balinese beach, your photos will tell your story in a natural, elegant way.
6. Do you photograph LGBTQ+ weddings?
Absolutely, proudly, and with joy. Love is love — and everyone deserves photos that make them feel seen, celebrated, and beautiful.
7. How many photos do we receive, and how long does it take?
Usually 600–900 fully edited images for a full-day wedding, delivered within 6–10 weeks. Every image is edited by me, personally — no outsourcing, no factory-style filters, just genuine artistry.
8. What happens if it rains during our destination wedding?
We dance anyway. Some of my favorite photos were taken in the rain — it’s romantic, cinematic, and totally real. I always come prepared with backup plans, weatherproof gear, and enthusiasm.
9. Do you help with planning or location advice?
Definitely. After photographing hundreds of destination weddings, I’ve learned what works (and what doesn’t). I can recommend timelines, venues, and even the best time of day for that golden-hour magic. I’m part photographer, part wedding travel guide.
10. How do we book you?
Send me a message through my contact page. Tell me where and when you’re getting married, and I’ll get back with pricing, travel details, and a few jokes. Once you confirm, we make it official, and I start planning how to tell your story beautifully.
